Elk City, Oklahoma (January 5, 2015) – The Elk City Chamber of Commerce has announced its Annual Banquet will be held on Tuesday, January 13 at 7 pm and will be held at the Elk City Convention Center. The Annual Banquet is one of Elk City’s most established business traditions, bringing a “Who’s Who” of over 300 local business, community and government leaders together for a night of networking and celebration.

 

The 2015 Annual Banquet, whose theme is “Together We Can” will feature the induction of the 2015 Chamber President, Dr. Russell Duck, Pastor Elk City First Baptist Church. Others who will be recognized during the Annual Dinner will be the 2015 Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the “2014 Pam Gregory Volunteer Award” will be presented to the community leader who has demonstrated outstanding performance and dedication to the Elk City Chamber. The Dinner will be provided by Cattle Call Catering.

 

This year’s keynote speaker will be Gary England.  Meteorologist Gary England is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology and mathematics.  OU recently honored him with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, the highest award the university can bestow.  Previously, OU named Gary as an Outstanding Alumni. 

 

Gary was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2013. He was also honored with feature stories about his career in the Los Angeles Times; the New York Times Magazine and other national media.  He is well known in the United States and many foreign countries due to appearing in over sixty weather specials and of course because of the movie, Twister.   

 

He has been awarded four Emmy’s and the Silver Circle Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.  He has also received Hall of Fame recognition from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters; the Western Oklahoma Hall of Fame and the Dewey County Hall of Fame.

 

Gary England has received the highest recognition for lifetime achievement and for television coverage of severe weather events. His honors include: Lifetime Achievement awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, American Women in Radio & Television and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

 

Among numerous awards Gary has earned is the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for best in the nation in Breaking Weather Coverage in all large markets.

 

Gary is internationally recognized for pioneering innovations in weather technology and systems that are now common tools in the world of severe weather coverage, including the storm time of arrival system; corner screen warning maps and cellular still picture-video transmission.

 

Gary is the Vice President for Corporate Relations and Weather Development at Griffin Communications and is Oklahoma's top rated television meteorologist.  He holds the distinction of being the person who implemented with Enterprise Electronics, the world's first commercial Doppler radar.  In 1981 Gary became the first person in history to use Doppler radar for direct warnings to the public.

 

But above all, Gary proudly served our country in the United States Navy and has been married to Miss Mary since it all began, and never forget, weather is his passion but the people of Oklahoma are his love.

 

The Elk City Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organization funded primarily through its membership revenue and event sponsorship. Hosting more than 30 events each year, the Chamber of Commerce relies heavily on its membership to serve as the volunteer base for all of its programs, events and services. The Chamber’s Mission statement, “Working together to foster an environment of growth and prosperity,” explains the dedication of the Chamber of Commerce membership in order to reach the goals of the community, both civic and cultural. The program of work supports fourteen committees that stress community involvement and volunteer participation.

 

The 2015 Elk City Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee includes: President, Dr. Russell Duck, Elk City First Baptist Church, Past-President, Shannon McAbee, JAMAC Construction and Appraisal Services of Western Oklahoma, President-Elect, Melody Cummings, Crow Insurance Agency, and Treasurer, Kathy Bell, Elk City Housing Authority.

 

Tickets for the Elk City Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet are $30 per person or a table of eight for $240. Tickets can be purchased at the Chamber office located at 1016 East Airport Industrial Road. Deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, January 9.
